Boy’s Brigade Share A Gift 2010

17 12 2010

Dear BASIC-ers,

Don’t forget that there will no BASIC tomorrow!

Instead, we will be going down to help the Boy’s Brigade in their ongoing "Share a Gift".

If you are joining us, please be at Singapore Bible College by 11am, tomorrow, 18th December, and NOT at church!

There will be a bus bringing us to the BB HQ and we will reach back around 5pm!

Do take this opportunity to join us and encourage fellow brothers and sisters in Christ with your presence, as well as discover how you can better pray for the community around us.

Hope to see you there tomorrow! :)

Acts 2 – what another Bible Study?

5 03 2010

On our schedules for 13 March is Acts 2. This is not another Bible Study but an opportunity for us to live out the truths of gospel.

Luke says in Acts 2:32:

32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

The resurrection and ascension (Jesus going up into heaven) & the pouring out of his Spirit calls for a response:

Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

Acts 2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

This response is repentance.

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Repentance is the changing of one’s mindset. 1 Thessalonians 1:10 shows us what this involves:

They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

Notice how the Thessalonians previously worshiped idols but now they’ve turned to serve God and to wait for his Son. This must now be our mindset but what will this look like in practice at BASIC?

Acts 2:42-47 gives us a picture of this:

Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Living out a life of repentance in BASIC will involve us devoting ourselves to the study of the Bible (apostles’ teaching), having fellowship & meals together (breaking of bread) and praying. Love will also characterize our meetings (as everyone looked out for each others needs – v45). As a result of this more people will be saved & come to join us (v47).

So the purpose of Acts 2 is an opportunity for us to live out the repented Christian life. Every Saturday we gather for hang out time from 3-5pm, big group meeting from 5-6pm and small group meeting from 6-7pm. This short four hour slot is really not enough for us to study the bible, have fellowship, eat together, pray & exercise love towards one another. This is why we’ve factored in the Acts 2 slot, so that we have time to practice the other parts of Acts 2:42-47 that we may not have time for during our regular 3-7pm BASIC time.

Synod Youth Games Day – Being Part of God’s Bigger Church

5 03 2010

We are part of God’s bigger church. John pictures God’s church in heaven and this is what it looks like:

Rev. 7:9   After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Being part of the Presbyterian church of Singapore/Synod reminds us of this truth and taking part in the Synod Youth Games Day on 27 February, together with youths from other English and Chinese Presbyterian churches enables us to live out this truth.

We sent three teams to the Synod Youth Games Day.

Our  Junior Badminton Team

Our Junior Captain’s Ball Team.

Our Junior Soccer Team.

Our teams played their hearts out, side by side their BASIC supporters and our junior soccer team managed to beat Amazing Grace  and Tong Chai Presbyterian Church to come up 1st in the Junior Soccer League:)

Until we are all together with God’s people worshipping in the new heavens and the new earth, let us make every effort to put into practice the great truth that we are part of God’s bigger church:) The next Synod event that we can look forward to is the Synod Youth Leadership Camp on 27-29 May 2010.

Rev. 22:1   Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

Yuk Yee is now a licensed preacher

20 02 2010

Dear Basicers,

On 18th February, I took my pledge as a licensed preacher having fulfilled all the requirements of the English Presbytery. What this means is that the English Presbytery (the English side of the Synod) has now “licensed” me to preach & teach the gospel & I’m now eligible to be invited by any church (this includes ARPC) to serve as their Minister.

If & when ARPC decides to call me as their minister, they will conduct a special service and thereafter I’ll carry the title “reverend”. The title “reverend” just means that I’ve been recognized by an external body as someone who is suitable in preaching & teaching the Bible, and the term “minister” just means servant. In other words, I’m no different from any of your youth leaders because they’ve been teaching the Bible and shepherding you, except in this case I’ve been recognized by the English Presbytery. What’s more important is God’s approval as what Paul says in:

1 Thessalonians 2:4 On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.

Below you’ll find the pledge that I took. I thought you should see it because this is in essence the pledge that all of us leaders have undertaken in leading you.

Yuk Yee

PLEDGE BY A LICENTIATE
Having been selected for licensing, with a view to preparing to take up the duties of the ministry, I do therefore sign this pledge in the presence of God, to testify to what I believe and to declare my resolution.

I believe the Old and New Testaments of the Bible to be the perfect and pure Word of God, enabling men to know the way of salvation, to know what they ought to believe and what they ought to do in order to be in accordance with God’s will. I do also believe the summary of the Church’s faith, will be obedient to it, will constantly proclaim it and will in no way act contrary to it. Heresies and other wrong doctrines which are not in accordance with the teaching of the Bible i completely reject.

I believe that God has called me for His work, and therefore I regard all such work and duty as holy. It is in the spirit of earnest, pious, faithful and reverent zeal that I do my utmost to fulfill my duties. If in the future what I believe and what I preach are not in according to the truth, I am willing to submit to the discipline laid down in the Constitution (rules and regulations) of our Church.

Concerning all that is stated above in the pledge I do declare that I am wholly dependent upon the grace and love of God for its fulfilment.

This is my pledge.

Please help parents attend the Family fellowship seminar “Music in Family Life”

19 02 2010

Dear BASICers,

Johnny Burns will be running a seminar called “Music in Family Life” to help equip our parents on how to use music for God’s glory especially as part of their parenting. It will be held this Sunday 21 Feb, 2-4pm at ARPC.

To help our parents with young children attend this seminar could we have some BASICers volunteer to look after young children from 2-4pm on Sunday? We need about 5 volunteers.

Please let your youth leaders know this Saturday if you can help:)

Praying for Missions (:

7 02 2010

Hey guys!
Hope you were all very encouraged by the sharing from joel, brian, mitchel and shu-en at BASIC this weekend! (:
Since we didnt get to pray in groups today at BASIC, here are the prayer points(: Do keep missions in prayer this week (:
Pray for Nellie (the Missionary that the team went to visit)
  • To continue to walk closely with God, to trust & obey Him in everything
  • As she explores a new area of Thailand (relatively unreached), for strength, wisdom & humility as she brings the Gospel to the people there
Praying for God’s Big Mission:
  • Praise God for His plan to save & gather people from every tribe & tongue to be His children
  • Pray that God will continue to raise missionaries, and for the gospel to be proclaimed, so that people can hear the real solution to their real problem, which is Sin

Have a good week ahead! (:

Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund

6 02 2010

Hey BASIC-ers!

For those who were not around last Saturday, BASIC will be having a bake-a-thon this Sunday, 7th Feb, at ARPC from 2pm onwards!

We will be baking Chinese New Year cookies to sell to the church for their CNY service door gifts. Based on the number of cookies baked, the church will donate money to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund that is being organised by the Synod Presbytery! Our aim is to bake 5000 cookies! YES! 5000! :)

Please do come down and help us if you can! And if you’d like to bring a friend along as well, they’re definitely welcome!

And now…. Prayer points! Please pray that

  • through this event, we will all be reminded how powerful our God is! With a word, He created the world! All the aid that we can give will never be able to fully eliminate the world’s problems. Only God has that power!
  • we will also be reminded of an even greater disaster that has befallen this world; that 80% of the people in this world have yet to know our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!
  • and lastly, that it will be a good time of fellowship and encouragement for those who come down!

Once again, its happening
7th Feb, Sunday, 2pm, ARPC 2nd Level.

Hope to see you guys there!
